NORTH CAROLINA READING ASSOCIATION
Passing of the Gavel:
2009-2010 NCRA President Sharron Regan passes the gavel to 2010-2011 NCRA President Ava Bevins!
When Francis Bacon wrote more than 400 years ago, "Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man", he must have been musing about the North Carolina Reading Association. We begin our 42nd year with 27 active reading councils in North Carolina and increased interest in chartering new councils throughout the state. NCRA and local leaders, with the support of the International Reading Association, continue to plan and carry out useful, informative programs that assist their members in reaching their literacy goals. Ava Bevins Goals: To coordinate the efforts and activities of the local councils by creating and maintaining partnerships to broaden current knowledge in literacy · Publish a newsletter four times a year · Maintain a website of resources and professional connections · Organize and present an annual reading conference · Organize Leadership meetings for local and state council members · Maintain Legislative Advocacy efforts · Support the implementation of the NC Standards · Support the Efforts of Local Councils in Promoting, Retaining, and Increasing Local, State, and International Memberships To promote community and parental involvement in language arts · Implement Young Author Project · Encourage reading and a love of books through innovative teaching methods · Strengthen collaboration with educational institutions To recognize outstanding literacy efforts in the state through: · Celebrate Literacy Award · Exemplary Reading Program Award · Honor Council Achievements · Grant opportunities · Scholarships
Through wide participation in projects and events, as well as frequent collaboration with partners across the state, let’s make the most of our opportunity to serve North Carolina students.
We look forward to a successful membership campaign this fall. Those without a local council are encouraged to join at large. Please contact any of our officers or Area Directors for information about membership or chartering a local council.
President 2010-2011
